Inspiration: Shutter Island

The very next step: actually coming up with an idea for our film opening. Now that my group members and i have discussed and agreed upon the genre of psychological thriller, we now have to create an idea of what we want our 2 minute film opening to consist of. Very first step was finding which mental illness we wanted our character to display. We started brainstorming and looking up several psychological thrillers to see what each character suffered from. I found a website titled 10 fascinating films about Schizophrenia. While searching through the website i came across Shutter Island directed by Martin Scorsese.

I had remembered watching this incredible film a couple years ago and how i fell in love with the directors ability to blur the lines between perception and reality, and between whats considered normal and whats considered insanity. The director Martin Scorsese used a theory known as Postmodernist theory which is something we learned about in the beginning of the year in Aice Media. The postmodernist theory is engaging with competing versions of truth and reality. More specifically, the director used a technique known as hyperreality theory. Hyperreality is when the character isn't able to distinguish the difference between what's real and what's not. This was portrayed perfectly in the film Shutter Island, when Leonardo DiCaprio, one of my favorite actors, struggles throughout the movie by creating a false reality and not being able to tell the difference between what's all in his head and what's actually occurring. I was always fascinates by these theories and I want to be able to incorporate this in the film opening. I talked with my group members and we decided we wanted to make the character suffer from Schizophrenia. Since most of my inspiration came from the film Shutter Island i decided to look up in an depth analysis of this film. I found a link to this website on Psychology today where it gave a psychoanalysis on what type of disorder Teddy, Leonardo DiCaprio, suffered from. It talks about the profession and regression of his mental illness and how he suffered from delusions and hallucinations, what most schizophrenic patients tend to suffer from, and labeling again his struggle with facing reality. I decided to research what type of symptoms schizophrenic patients deal with in order to create the perfect archetype for our character in our film opening. The Webmd website offered a lot of insight about schizophrenia and talked about how they can suffer from delusions, can have trouble concentrating, and can have confused thoughts and impaired speech. I knew these were all qualities i wanted our character to display and will for sure keep this in mind when filming commences.
